Hand tufted carpet use high quality wool so the finished product looks and wears much like a hand-knotted rug. Unlike a hand-knotted rug, a hand tufted rug is created without tying knots.

Making a hand tufted carpets takes a fraction of the time to make, therefore greatly reducing the cost. As a result, hand-tufted carpet is very affordable. These wool carpets are made with a tool called a “tufting gun.” Loops of wool are pushed through a backing that has been imprinted with the overall design. When the rug maker is through with his process another foundation, called a scrim is applied with latex glue. When this dries, the final protective cloth backing is applied.

The last step is to shear the rug so that all of the loops on the top of the rug are cut, which in turn creates the pile.

This is the ratio of wool (80%) to nylon (20%) used in the surface pile yarn, a blend that provides the softness, lustres and luxury of wool with the strength and resilience of nylon.

The Axminster name refers to the construction method of one type of woven carpet. This technique offers excellent pattern definition. Most Axminster carpets are patterned.

Machine-tufted carpets are made when the tufts, clusters of yarn fibers, are drawn through some sort of medium and inserted into a primary backing. A secondary backing is then adhered to the primary backing with a coat of lates, effectively laminating for a 2-dimensional construction

Machine made are made by large machines called power looms. A power loom is electrically automated and controlled by computers. Machine made rugs can be made quickly and are manufactured with materials including wool and synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon, polyester, acrylic and art silk.

It can offer a lower price alternative to hand knotted rugs. Machine made rugs usually have a life span of about 20 years or less, depending on the quality and fiber used. For example, a high-quality machine-made wool rug can last for decade if it is well maintained.

A traditional Wilton weave carpet is one in which the pile threads run continuously in to the carpet and raised above the surface of the Integral backing by means of wires or hooks.

Wilton carpets are often cut or loop products and different yarn types can be used to produce different surface textures. Wilton weaving is not as versatile as Axminster for the production of patterned carpets, due to continuous yarns that create waste yarn on the back of the carpet.

Another luxury, quality carpet, it derives its name from the type of loom used, which weaves the yarn in a continuous strand. Available in a wide range of patterns, Wilton carpets have a smooth, velvety, woven surface.

Carpet tiles are square sections of carpeting that are sometimes uses to replace rolled carpeting.
